Tuesday – 1/3/11, saw the welcome return of Ramadanman‘s ACETATE night to Wire Club, Leeds. The night is based on a simple notion; perfect sound quality.
It is 100% vinyl powered by a Function One system with a UREI rotary mixer which encorporates a custom-made 3 band isolator – a ridiculous contraption, please do have a gander.
Unfortunately, it has become a sad truth that watching DJ’s operate on vinyl decks in clubs has almost become a novel experience, rare as the duck-billed Platypus. Panasonic’s decision to the cease production of the Technics 1210 turntable model in 2010 could well have attributed to the meteoric rise in popularity of the laptop and the CDJ that seems to have taken over in clubs.
However, with acts like, Floating Points; Appleblim; Joy Orbison; Ben UFO (playing a 2-hour Jungle set!) and Ramadanman/Pearson Sound/Maurice Donovan (or whatever ridiculous moniker he dreams up) having all played ACETATE, one can seek solace in the fact that, whilst it their numbers may have diminished, the vinyl deck is still a fundamental element to the club scene.
Tuesday heralded the turns of, Kode 9, Joe and JackMaster, the latter of which absolutely killed it. If you get an opportunity to catch one of his sets grab it! Tight! But it was Kode 9′s opening track, Stevie Wonder’s If You Really Love Me that really set the tone for what transpired to be an awesome night. The brains behind Hyperdub inspired me to search through my shamefully small collection and in doing so I unearthed this gem from Flying Lotus.
ACETATE returns to The Wire on 1st March with, Pinch b2b Peverelist, Kowton and Midland.

Taken from the new Kode 9 12″ ‘You Don’t Wash‘, the Actress remix is a lonely world of endless Nintendo levels, possibly Super Mario, but with more of an undercurrent of ether misuse; never sure of your goal but safe in the knowledge that you can carry on faultlessly until the song comes to an end.
