This week’s Jungle track is another release from the Tearin’ Vinyl label. This tune is the DJ Dextrous remix of Ruffneck Scouts which was the B – side to The Licence remix. I love the tacky midi-piano sample in the introduction as well as the great pitch adjusted Amen-break in the drums. Watch out for an absolutely filthy second bass line at 3.07′.

DJ Harmony remix of Danny Break’s first release on Droppin’ Science. Huge Amen break. That’s about all that needs to be said really. High quality Friday Jungle.

Philly Blunt Records release number 2 in 1994 was Warning by Fire Fox (Roni Size) and 4-Tree (no idea). This is the Powder mix. The Yardie vocal sample is from the Shabba Ranks tune, Respect. The Reggae instrumental sample in the break down at 1.43′ is Wayne Smith’s Under Mi Sleng Teng which was also put to good use by Johnny Osbourne in Buddy Bye Bye. With regards to the track posted below, it cracks me up every time I play it out because at 2.54′ the drum breaks slip out of time with each other so it sounds like a bad mix by the DJ. Honestly, check it out, it properly clangs!

Suburban Base Records, founded in 1992, put out music by loads of great produces such as: Hype; Krome and Time; DJ Dexterous and Marvelous Cain to name but a few. I got this track in the record fair at Oxford Town Hall. The guy who sold it to me can be found on Brick Lane at the weekends, outside Vibe Bar. This guy has got so many Jungle records, he has stolen hours of my life, hours. But I consider it to be time well spent as this track is amazingly good. It’s called Connections and this is the Marvelous Cain mix which is, infact, a remix of Gun Connection by Q-Bass. It features the vocals of Skeng Gee.

Post number 7: Squeeze by long time KOOL FM selectors, DJ Vern & DJ Ash. It came out in 1995 as the second release on Krome and Time’s Tearin’ Vinyl label. I first heard this tune in a Shy FX mix I downloaded which was on the BBC Radio 1′s old show, One in the Jungle. It samples a track by Courtney Melody of the same name.

Air Freshener by Tom and Jerry, otherwise known as 4 Hero, is probably my favorite Jungle record that I own. I remember embarrassing myself whilst dancing around Honest Jon’s in Portobello Road when the guy behind the counter played it for me. I have it as a 2005 re-issue put out by PK Records but it was originally released in 1994 as part of the Still Lets Me Down 12”, released on Tom and Jerry. The opening of the track samples Initmate Friends by Eddie Kendricks.

DJ Hype, like Dillinja and all the big Jump-up DJs, has been around for decades. Hype’s Jungle often consists of very melodic bass lines. In the case of this track, We Must Unite, the bass line spans a fair few octaves which I think is pretty cool. I’m stealing the idea for my tunes.
I have We Must Unite as part of a 12” compilation album called Still Smokin which was put out in 1996 on G-Line Records. It features tracks from Hype’s Ganja Records label and, fellow True Playaz man, Pascal’s Frontline Records.

Dillinja has more aliases than any other producer I know. The track Gangsta sees him under the name of Trinity and was the third release put out by the Philly Blunt label in 1995. I got this track as a Promo in an odd record shop in Leith, Edinburgh when I was up there last summer for the Festival. It makes extensive use of a Terror Fabulous song by the same name.

Got this track as part of a compilation called Nu Skool Flava (what an awful name for an album) that was put out by Sound of the Underground Records (S.O.U.R.) in 1996. It is a remix by L Double of Elizabeth Troy’s single-a-long Jungle anthem, Let Me Be. I love the second drop at 3.42′.

I got this track as 10” promo from an amazing record shop which is opposite where I used to live on the Essex Road in the Angel. The shop is called Haggle Vinyl and is run by a short, grumpy Jewish who doesen’t like haggling. “Me a Bad Man” is by Bay B Kane and is the only track I have by him. It was put out on Kik-Man Records in 1994 and has militant, agressive drums that err to the Hardcore side of Jungle. It sticks to the magic tripartite formula of breaks, sub-bass and a sample of a Yardie saying something, making it an angry piece of music.

Welcome to my new series of posts based around my favorite genre of music: Jungle. The series will consist of tunes from my Jungle vinyl collection that I will record into my computer, make as load as possible and post up for you to save. I am only going to post up things that I believe are out of print and that you could only get second hand and will provide as much information as possible as to where you can get hold of the tracks.
As well as my vinyl collection I am going to post up DJ mixes and will re-post the Jungle tracks already available on the site as part of the series.
First up is vocal lead track by Kemet Crew called “The Fruit”. I got this track as part of the Classic Jungle & Old Skool E.P. compilation put out on Junlge Nation. I love the vocals at 3.18′.

I wouldn’t normally bother blogging a mix put out by Fact as they get alot of exposure as it is. However, I regard it to be my duty as a Junglist to spread the word about Kode 9′s mix; especially as it features a Lemon D tune I posted up a few months ago, here. Listen out for Oh Gosh by Undercover Agent. All Junglist.
