Check out a free track from Leeds-based duo, Big Mister Doom. Their EP ranges from skittering electronica to textured, cinematic melodies.

Manifesto Music are a free net-based label run by Everyday Junglist. I recently had the pleasure of working with them on their new logo and identity, as well as designing artwork for their debut EP ‘Izanami’ from Icelandic producer Muted. One of the most rewarding parts of this project, apart from the tremendous soundtrack provided by Muted, was the chance to collaborate with Danish photographer Kim Høltermand, who’s work I’d been following for some time.

It’s not often that one can call Jungle a progressive form of dance music; but Lemon D’s I Can’t Stop, released in 1996 on Bryan G and Jumping Jack Frost’s V Recordings, is an exception.
The track is a demonstration of how to layer breaks to create Jungle drums, as Lemon D takes his time to add new sounds every 8 or 16 bars. The track doesn’t drop until 3, 03. The drawn out nature of the music makes it a great for long mixes and it’s worth the wait as the bass sound at the drop is nothing short of mighty.

Jonquil have an eight track mini-album, One Hundred Suns, coming out in November on NYC-based independent, Dovecote. The band are touring the UK in November; check their myspace for a gig near you. In anticipation of the album is the track below, London, for you to download.

It is a frequently asked question amongst Junglists: who does run t’ings? I would proffer that, based on this track from his 1995 album Just An Example, it is in fact Shy FX who runs things. The vocal sample in this tune was later re-used by Shy FX in the Drum and Bass track Murderation.

The first 15 posts in the FTLOJ series have focused on individual releases. A mix is definitely overdue. Here is one complied by DJ Marky back in May of this year. It starts of with old Hardcore and progresses into Jungle and contains loads of great tracks such as Tom and Jerry’s Air Freshener and Undercover Agent’s Oh Gosh. As with all DJ Marky sets the mixing is impeccable. This compilation is a real jem and I strongly recommend putting it on your I-pod right this very minute.

More Dillinja but this time under his Capone alias. Massive is the b-side to Soldier which was the first realease on the Hard Leaders label in 1995. Based on peoples comments about drums re: FTLOJ #14, I think that Massive opens with the Think-break.

Sky is the b-side to Mutha*ucka which was posted up as FTLOJ#13. The track makes extensive use of cool sporadic snare rolls which come in all over the place. I don’t know what any of the breaks used in the drums are. If you know, please do enlighten me.

Mutha*fucka is another release on Philly Blunt Records. This track, from 1995, incorporates Dillinja’s trademark square wave sound which he layers on top of the sub. The b-side to this release is another great track which I’ll post up next week.

This is the a-side to the second release on Roni Size and Krust’s Full Cycle label, Daylight. The song opens with a sample from Daylight by Ramp which was also used by A Tribe Called Quest in their track Bonita Applebum.

This week’s Jungle track is another release from the Tearin’ Vinyl label. This tune is the DJ Dextrous remix of Ruffneck Scouts which was the B – side to The Licence remix. I love the tacky midi-piano sample in the introduction as well as the great pitch adjusted Amen-break in the drums. Watch out for an absolutely filthy second bass line at 3.07′.

DJ Harmony remix of Danny Break’s first release on Droppin’ Science. Huge Amen break. That’s about all that needs to be said really. High quality Friday Jungle.

Philly Blunt Records release number 2 in 1994 was Warning by Fire Fox (Roni Size) and 4-Tree (no idea). This is the Powder mix. The Yardie vocal sample is from the Shabba Ranks tune, Respect. The Reggae instrumental sample in the break down at 1.43′ is Wayne Smith’s Under Mi Sleng Teng which was also put to good use by Johnny Osbourne in Buddy Bye Bye. With regards to the track posted below, it cracks me up every time I play it out because at 2.54′ the drum breaks slip out of time with each other so it sounds like a bad mix by the DJ. Honestly, check it out, it properly clangs!

Suburban Base Records, founded in 1992, put out music by loads of great produces such as: Hype; Krome and Time; DJ Dexterous and Marvelous Cain to name but a few. I got this track in the record fair at Oxford Town Hall. The guy who sold it to me can be found on Brick Lane at the weekends, outside Vibe Bar. This guy has got so many Jungle records, he has stolen hours of my life, hours. But I consider it to be time well spent as this track is amazingly good. It’s called Connections and this is the Marvelous Cain mix which is, infact, a remix of Gun Connection by Q-Bass. It features the vocals of Skeng Gee.

Post number 7: Squeeze by long time KOOL FM selectors, DJ Vern & DJ Ash. It came out in 1995 as the second release on Krome and Time’s Tearin’ Vinyl label. I first heard this tune in a Shy FX mix I downloaded which was on the BBC Radio 1′s old show, One in the Jungle. It samples a track by Courtney Melody of the same name.
